Do you want to play softball in college? Many (but not all) travel softball players have that dream. It is DEFINITELY a dream that you can achieve!
If the answer is yes and you are in high school, how many of you have registered with NCAA? In our experience, this was something we had to do for our daughter that no one told us about. Some of you have awesome high school coaches and counselors that will help you through this process. If you don't, you and your parents will need to make sure that certain things are getting done if you want to play in college.
One of the first steps is to register as a student-athlete at www.ncaa.org.Write down your NCAA profile ID because you will need to check back regularly to see if you need to complete any steps in the eligibility process. The NCAA site provides you with lots of helpful info.
Another thing that is a priority is your academics. The statistics show that you have a higher chance of getting more scholarship money from your academics than you do from athletics. College coaches want top-notch student athletes. You are of no use to them if you can't pass your classes.
Prepare for and take the ACT until your score is as high as you can get it. Have you completed the Recruiting Questionnaires for your colleges? (Remember, their are recruiting guidelines depending on your age/year in school. You can find that info on the NCAA site.)
Another important aspect to consider while you are playing softball is that you will want to protect your amateur status. The NCAA will verify your amateur status upon your graduation from high school by asking you many questions about your softball history. The New River Express organization stays up to date on all NCAA guidelines and will answer any questions that you may have. If we don't know the answer, we will find the answer.
